BEHIND THE SCREEN | AN ART TRIBUTE TO ISABELLE HUPPERT 28. April 2017 - 26. August 2017

On April 28th 2017, during Berlin Gallery Weekend, Michael Fuchs gallery will present “Behind the Screen”, an exhibition celebrating the iconic French actress Isabelle Huppert. Through a series of photographs and videos, some internationally renowned artists - including Marco Brambilla, Douglas Gordon, Roni Horn, Christian Jankowski and Oda Jaune - will reflect on certain aspects of Huppert's multi-faceted personality. “Behind the Screen” appears as such as a contemporary art tribute to one of today's greatest actress.

The central work is Roni Horn’s serial work around the French actress Isabelle Huppert “Portrait of an Image” consisting of one hundred photographs, created in 2005. This work shows the natural look of Isabelle Huppert’s face without any makeup. Through this waiving of “embellishment“ the actress’ vulnerability leads to a high authenticity of the photographic portraits. Fifty photographs in up to twenty sequences of five photos each show an enormous amount of emotions. Isabelle Huppert slipped into some of her film characters; thereby only her memories helped her to embody those characters. Accordingly, Huppert’s face is the expression of numerous personalities that only exist in film worlds and not reality.
