Leiko Ikemura | In Praise of Light

Church rooms are spaces of light, vessels of light, which collect the light within. The Berlin-based artist Leiko Ikemura transforms the light by designing the windows of St. Matthew's Church as large-format spatial drawings: Painting of light and color, whose segments flow into each other above the altar in a light projection. Leiko Ikemura thus ties in with the history of the destruction of St. Matthew's Church, which was destroyed to the ground in the last days of the Second World War and whose originally coloured windows were replaced by clear glass windows after its reconstruction. What could contemporary windows for this church look like 75 years after the end of the war? How can past and present be related to each other in the light space of the church? Is healing possible? - In the light shadow of their windows, Leiko Ikemura's sculptures "Scream" and "Memento mori" in the church interior recall the lasting wound - and the light of a lasting hope.

"Dreams and Dramas", organised by the art and culture platform Arterritory.com, will bring the spotlight on the relevant Israel - its vitality, directness, vulgarity, fun, high dreams and deep dramas.
