If you want to compare femininity with masculinity you do not necessarily have to distinguish in black and white. The current exhibition in the Michael Fuchs Galerie demonstrates that there also is a grey area.

There is feminine and there is masculine and it is indispensable that we give different attributes to those genders. Traditionally, in fine arts it is common to demonstrate explicitly male or female characteristic traits to strengthen the illustration of the depicted person.

In his painting of a young women lost in her thoughts, André Derain also succeeds in creating this effect. With all her tenderness, sensitivity and gracefulness the girl represents the female sex in a classical sense. Thomas Grünfeld’s photographs are more direct. These images of female bodies are almost stereotypically confronting the observer with feminine eroticism. José Luis Verdes shows typical male qualities such as power, strength, and endurance in his oil painting of a young boy moving hand over hand on a chain.

Tony Cragg’s sculpture is a snapshot of a person running, transformed into wood. Because of the blurred form of the individual and the neutral title ‘Runner’, one doesn’t receive any information about gender. All that matters for the artist is the rendition of an observation or an experience, which is happening completely detached from the gender of the person performing the act. Andy Warhol reduces the use of gender-related features in his portraits of men and women to a few simple marks. Nevertheless he succeeds in creating an accurate characterization of the individual without any confusion regarding the gender.

FEMININE/ MASCULINE works on two levels. On one hand there is a strict classification of the female and the male by expressing their classical attributes. Yet there is another level, where the unambiguous assignment of the genders happens in a less evident way or doesn’t exist at all. In this case it is up to the visitor to find an answer to the gender-issue.
